Scarab Village is Sedgefield’s one-stop arts and craft market on the scenic Garden Route in South Africa where the visitor can browse through the permanent Scarab Paper and Craft Centre, visit the Saturday Craft Market or enjoy a French-Moroccan bistro-style meal at Café François.
From a humble beginning in December 2006, Scarab Village has grown to a centre that offers home-made cheese, finely turned wooden art pieces, jewellery and paper made from elephant dung.
Scarab Village, which has lived through the Sedgefield flood of 2007, offers a playground for young children, music entertainment on Saturday markets and permanent, spotlessly clean restrooms.
At the centre of Scarab Village is The Red Roof that can be transformed into a versatile function venue.
Whether you need unique, hand-made paper using elephant dung and recycled paper, or an exclusive gift, chances are ten to one that you will find it at the Scarab Paper & Craft Centre. Most of the art work in this lively, colourful shop are creations of Rita Knoetze, one of the proprietors and organisers of Scarab Village. Rita also displays selected quality art and craft items from outsiders in her shop.
On Saturday mornings the Garden Route crafters of Sedgefield, Knysna and surrounding areas set up their stalls at Scarab Village to sell their wares. Together with the permanent tenants at Scarab Village, the Saturday Craft Market offers a wide variety of original gifts and beautiful crafts.
