Spring energy is in the air

Spring clearly has arrived, and there is more than a spark of energy emanating from our Village. This is evident in the creative ways the crafters have adapted their products to suit the somewhat condensed buying power of the visitors. In the current harsh times, one would imagine that all creativity and inspiration would be at a low ebb when the struggle to survive the onslaught of price increases, labour unrest and drought are foremost in one’s mind. But as the saying goes “necessity is the mother of invention”.

Scarab Craft Centre has recently had a revamp.  The trading area has been modified to create a more compact and striking display. Rita Knoetze has used her inspired artist’s eye to colour co-ordinate the shop and already compliments are being bandied about.

If woodturning conjures up images of old pensioners in dusty corduroys pottering around their workshops – forget it. The Natural Edge is home to some of the best and most innovative wood turners in the world. Some of these turners have won international acclaim for their groundbreaking work. Come and see the creative designs made from bone, ivory, pewter, horn and palm nuts and meet a turner or two.  And you could also be nuts about turning!

In Biblical times, the disciple Paul looked at the Roman soldiers assigned to guard him and likened the armour of the soldiers to the spiritual armour that God has given to protect everyone. Bead Magic have silver charms depicting truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Spirit that represent the six pieces of armour, which is called the Armour of God. Made into a necklace or bracelet it makes a very thoughtful gift for treasured friends.

And our beetle has now been replicated in silver and rolling a semi-precious stone (in this case Labradorite). As the Scarab beetle played a major part in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, Ali from One Bright Day created a delicate, almost life-size pendant of our famous bug. It can be made up with a stone of your choice.  Ali is also producing a range of men’s jewellery with silver and elephant hair. Metro-sexual bracelets are the very latest fashion this year.

A new tenant at The Village is jeangenie. Jean, who started Scarab Market, has opened a homeware, gift and furniture section in the main building. The theme of the shop is relaxed lifestyle living. Here you can purchase or order customised furniture, soft cotton quilts,  tablecloths, throws or smaller gifts.
